Vietnam based Bamboo Airways gets approval for US flights

Wednesday, 13 Nov, 2020 0

Vietnamese full service carrier Bamboo Airways has been granted a permit from the U.S. Department of Transportation to operate nonstop US flights.

It hopes to start US flights in 2021 or early 2022, and will operate wide-body Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner flights from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.

"Depending on the pandemic recovery of the US and market conditions,  we will operate nonstop flights to the US," said Nguyen Ngoc Trong, Deputy Director-General of Bamboo Airways

Bamboo becomes the second Vietnamese airline to gain initial approval to fly to the US after flag carrier Vietnam Airlines.

The country’s biggest low cost carrier Vietjet has also previously expressed interest in flying to the US but doesn’t have the necessary aircraft yet.

There are no current nonstop routes connecting Vietnam with the US, with connecting flights taking about 18 hours.

The FAA has given Vietnam a Category 1 aviation rating for the International Aviation Safety Assessment program which allows Vietnam carriers to open routes to the US.
