VisitEngland was prepared for budget cut

VisitEngland chief executive James Berresford says the tourism body was well prepared for the 34% budget cut announced this week.

The budget for next year will be £9.2m.

"We are already well prepared to adapt our business model to this cut and will ensure VisitEngland continues to meet our fundamental goal to grow the value of domestic tourism," said Berresford.

"England’s Strategic Framework for Tourism, launched earlier this year continues as our blueprint for growth.

"The tourism minister will launch the government’s tourism strategy at the end of the year and this will be another great opportunity for us to continue to work closely together to boost tourism in England."

He said an immediate focus VisitEngland was to work with the tourism minister and the travel industry to ensure tourism was supported throughout the country as the regional development agencies’ funding for tourism ceases.

"Tourism is a hugely important economic driver and is one of but a few sectors that if properly supported can offer real growth potential," added Berresford. "England in particular is a remarkable destination and a real powerhouse in UK tourism. It alone represents 84 per cent of the total UK tourism value, worth £97billion, and supports in excess of 2 million jobs.”
