An airline employee has had access to secure areas of Charlotte Douglas Airport revoked after being accused of taking a box of live ammunition through a security checkpoint.
The employee works for Piedmont Airlines as a ramp agent according to local media outlet Channel 9 News, and is now under investigation.
A co-worker spotted the box of bullets inside the secure area and alerted Homeland Security officials, parent company American Airlines said.
A spokeswoman for American said possessing ammunition inside secure areas violates both airline and airport policy and secure access to the areas has been withdrawn while the company investigates.
An airport spokeswoman told the TV station they do not disclose security methods but they are ‘robust’ and involve several layers.
A police report has been filed but the employee is unlikely to be charged with an offense.
