Acapulco sees big rise in cruise ship traffic
Acapulco is seeing a resurgence as a cruise destination despite the ever present danger of gun violence in the Mexican resort city.
Cruise ship calls are on track for annual growth of 78% with a total of 32 ships through 2017.
Last year just 18 ships called at Acapulco.
Cruise lines serving the city include Norwegian Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas, Silversea, Oceania Cruises, Crystal and Hapag Lloyd.
"Acapulco is experiencing a major renaissance in its cruise ship arrivals for 2017, with 14 more ships arriving this year over 2016," said Ernesto Rodríguez Escalona, secretary of tourism of the State of Guerrero.
"This significant increase is a testament to our commitment to growth supported by new projects and investments from both the public and private sectors."
The tourism board is touting the successful marketing of the city to cruise executives during the Seatrade Cruise Global trade event in Fort Lauderdale earlier this year.
Starting in winter 2018, Acapulco will also be home for Cruise and Maritime Voyages’ 1,400-passenger vessel Magellan.
The Magellan will sail itineraries to Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, Manzanillo, Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas.
Acapulco will continue to collaborate with international cruise lines to boost cruise tourism and maintain tourism assistance and safety, officials said.
