‘Active shooter’ scare at New York JFK a false alarm

Thursday, 15 Aug, 2016 0
Flight operations have resumed and passenger terminals reopened at New York JFK after false reports of an active shooter inside the terminal building late Sunday.

Police gave the all-clear after a full sweep of terminal buildings was carried out with nothing found.

"Preliminary investigation does not indicate shots were fired at JFK. There are no injuries," a statement from Port Authority said.

The airport’s public spaces had been evacuated earlier after reports of gunfire.

Law enforcement also closed an approach to the airport as a precaution and the FAA placed a ground stop on all aircraft movements for a short time.

Reports suggest clapping and cheering from people watching the Olympic Games may have been misinterpreted as the sound of gun shots.

Officials said Port Authority Police, critical response command teams, NYPD officers and fire crews were quickly on the scene overseeing the evacuation and terminal sweep.
