Agents condemn ‘insurance lottery’ story

Wednesday, 22 May, 2003 0

Travel agents have condemned a newspaper article that suggests customers are charged for their holiday insurance according to where they live.

The Daily Express yesterday carried a story referring to a survey by the insurance seller Insure and Go, which said that there were huge variations in insurance costs – of up to 400 per cent – around the country. The “damning new research” named Thomas Cook, Lunn Poly and STA Travel as chains that have quoted vastly different amounts from branch to branch.

The Express claims that Thomas Cook “varied the cost of an annual insurance policy for a family of four by £275”, while STA’s Bristol branch supposedly quoted £400 when the company’s other branches charge less than £100. Insure and Go’s Perry Wilson said: “It is as if firms are penalising people on the perceived affluence of their postcode.”

However, all three agents vehemently denied the accusations. A spokesman for STA Travel said: “We do not price by location. Every consultant at STA Travel sells insurance from the same price list, regardless of which branch they work in. There has clearly been some confusion over the product being quoted for.” Lunn Poly and Thomas Cook also told News From Abroad that insurance prices are the same throughout the country.

Insure and Go stuck by their story, a spokesman stating that the survey proves agents are “not insurance specialists”. The Daily Express was not available for comment at the time of going to press. To see the full survey visit www.insureandgo.com.
