Air India has been forced to ground an aircraft after it was flown multiple times without a valid airworthiness certificate.
It operated eight flights without the certificate.
The aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation confirmed it has been grounded and several Air India employees were taken off duty pending findings from an ongoing investigation.
The plane is thought to be an Airbus A320.
Air India said it reported the issue and suspended employees who were responsible for allowing it to fly.
“An incident involving one of our aircraft operating without an airworthiness review certificate is regrettable,” an Air India spokesperson said.
“As soon as this came to our notice, it was duly reported to the DGCA.”
Flying without airworthiness paperwork is considered a major safety compliance offence and can result in major fines.
Air India added it will ‘put corrective measures in place to prevent such failures from occurring in future.’
