Airbnb blocks new bookings from all but key workers

Tuesday, 09 Apr, 2020 0

Airbnb has blocked new bookings for stays up to and including April 18 except for key workers.

The move follows reports that some hosts were advertising their properties on the platform as ‘Covid-19 retreats’, which is against the Government’s new restrictions on movement.

Hosts will only be allowed to accept bookings via Airbnb from key workers for visits before April 18.

Announcing its decision to accommodation owners, Airbnb said: "As you know, the Government rules require everyone providing holiday accommodation in the UK to close, except for very limited types of stays.

"In light of this, last week, we temporarily blocked private room bookings and switched off the ‘instant book’ feature for entire home properties in the UK.

"Since then, we’ve heard that both hosts and local residents are worried about guest visits, and the impact on the health of their communities. In these difficult times, our number one priority is the health and safety of hosts, your guests, and your communities."

It said temporary blocks had been applied to new bookings that start on or before April 18, but existing visits can continue and bookings made as part of Airbnb Frontline Stays programme will not be affected.

"We will review these temporary measures by 18 April 2020 in line with Government guidance, and regularly after that, and lift them as soon as we can," it added.
