Airline complaints almost quadruple
Consumer complaints against US airlines nearly quadrupled in 2022, compared to pre-pandemic levels.
A report from the U.S. Public Interest Research Group found surging complaints despite more people traveling in 2019.
The report said 190,000 flights were canceled last year, representing nearly 3% of all scheduled services.
Another 1.4 million more flights were delayed.
“The airlines have a lot of challenges,” said Teresa Murray, consumer watchdog for U.S. PIRG.
Almost every category saw increases in complaints, from cancelations, delays, ticketing issues and lost baggage.
“We’re not saying don’t fly but you want to be prepared,” Murray said.
“If your flight is canceled for any reason after you book, you’re entitled to a full refund within seven days.”
“Nearly every major holiday and travel period last year was marred by cancellations,” the report says, adding that airlines and airports weren’t ready for peak demand.
