The chief operating officer of low cost carrier Allegiant has abruptly stepped down.
Steve Harfts is resigning after just over one year as COO amid growing concerns over the airline’s recent safety record.
The airline has been involved in several emergency landings due to mechanical issues.
It recently said it would beef up training for pilots and dispatchers after a plane was forced to land because it was low on fuel.
A former pilot is also taking legal action against Allegiant after being fired for approving an emergency evacuation when he saw smoke coming from a jet engine.
"The company will use this leadership change as an opportunity to refocus on operational needs and areas for improvement," Allegiant said in a statement.
"We thank Steve for his contributions to Allegiant," said chairman and CEO Maurice J. Gallagher.
Before joining Allegiant, Harfts was COO of budget airline IndiGo, based in New Delhi, India.
