American Airlines president Scott Kirby has left the world’s biggest airline and has immediately taken a similar role with rival United Airlines.
Kirby steps in to the newly-created president’s position as second in command to United CEO Oscar Munoz and will have ultimate responsibility for United’s operations, marketing, sales, network planning and revenue management.
Kirby was named US Airways’ president in 2006, and took over in the same role at American when it announced the merger with US Airways.
American said Kirby’s departure is down to succession planning and he is being replaced by COO Robert Isom, another executive who came through the US Airways’ ranks.
"Robert’s promotion and Scott’s departure are the result of our Board of Directors’ succession planning efforts. Our board chose to act proactively to establish a team and structure that will best serve American for the longer-term future." American CEO Doug Parker said.
Kirby becomes the third high profile appointment to United’s executive team in recent weeks after the hiring of former Allegiant president Andrew as CFO and Julie Haywood as chief commercial officer.
"I am honored to be joining United at this important and exciting time and to have the opportunity to help accelerate the momentum the airline has achieved over the past year," Kirby said in statement.
