American/US Airways merger memorandum goes to pilots
A "memorandum of understanding" has been drawn up between pilot unions representing US Airways and American Airlines pilots.
The agreement between Charlotte-based US Airline Pilots Association and Fort Worth-based Allied Pilots Association has already gotten union leader approval. Voting by US Airways pilots is projected to be completed by February 8.
The memorandum lays out terms by which over 16,000 pilots from both airlines will be integrated into a new network for the potential new mega airline.
The agreement, which was released to the press and public this week, says that American’s pilots will continue to fly American Airlines’ aircraft as well as those on order. US Airways pilots will continue to fly US Airways aircraft. In addition, American’s pilots continue to fly all their trans-Pacific routes and US Airlines pilots maintain their Boston-LaGuardia-D.C. shuttles and their current Phoenix to Hawaii flights.
Industry analysts believe that the new merged airline would most likely be called American Airlines and that the potential merger is all but a done deal.
