Another cruise ship barred from Caribbean port

Yet another cruise ship has been denied port entry in the Caribbean.

This time passengers of UK-based Fred Olsen Cruise Lines have been forced to stay aboard the Braemer ship after the Dominican Republic turned it away from La Romana.

The line called it an ‘overreaction.’

The ship is carrying 1,128 passengers and Fred Olsen acknowledged that several passengers were under observation with flu-like symptoms.

"We believe that this was as a result of a small number of influenza-like cases on board," the company said.

"No guests or crew are, or have been, displaying symptoms that are considered to be consistent with those of coronavirus."

Victor Gomez, director of the port authority said: "To avoid risks, it’s better to take precautions," adding that a medical team boarded the ship to see the ill passengers and crew.

It is the third time a cruise ship has been turned away from ports in the Caribbean despite there being no confirmed cases of coronavirus yet on ships in the region.

On the same day, the MSC Meraviglia was finally allowed to dock in Cozumel after being turned away from Jamaica and Grand Cayman because of a sick crew member.

Earlier this month the AIDAperla cruise ship was denied entry in Dominica and Saint Lucia.
