Appeal launched after earthquake death toll rises
The Red Cross has launched an appeal for $10 million following the deaths of up to 5,500 people in a huge earthquake on the Indonesian island of Java.
As many as 200,000 people fled their homes after the quake hit in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Besides the deaths, more than 10,000 residents are believed to have been injured as the quake, measuring 6.3, laid waste to buildings south of the city of Yogyakarta, the BBC reported.
The worst devastation was reported to be in the town of Bantul where more than 2,000 are thought to have been killed.
A relief effort involving the Red Cross and Unicef includes sending emergency supplies including 2,000 tents, 9,000 tarpaulins and hygiene kits.
Aid pledges have come in from around the world including $5.5 million from the UK, $2.5 million from the US and $2.3 million from Australia.
