Are customers really concerned about swine flu when travelling?
A survey by HolidayExtras.com has found that 41% of customers are mildly concerned by the threat of contracting swine flu when they travel.
The poll of 498 customers found 36% say they will be taking precautions such as washing their hands frequently.
Only a cautious 1% plan to wear a mask when travelling overseas.
Some 22% of customers said they are not worried at all by the outbreak.
Dr Laurence Gerlis, health expert on HolidayExtras.com, said: “Travellers should try not to go on holiday if suffering or recovering from recent swine flu.
“Symptoms such as cough, sneezing and high fever
should be noted and it is likely that your airline will refuse to take you if you are obviously unwell. You will need five to seven days after an attack to be fit to travel.
“The UK has a high incidence of swine flu, so you are at lower risk abroad than at home.
“Take some hand wipes and use them to clean surfaces, e.g. hand rests on planes. This should decrease transmission.
“The vast majority of people recover fully from swine flu but you may need to get medical advice locally if you become unwell while away.
“Paracetamol and lots of fluids (no alcohol) are usually the answer. Travellers are not being advised to take Tamiflu with them on holiday in case they become unwell.”
