ATC strikes: Ryanair calls for Von der Leyen to step down

Ryanair is again calling for swift action after another period of strike action caused hundreds of flight cancellations in Europe,

Ryanair issued an open letter to Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, calling on her to quit if she fails to take action.

The airline’s main contention is the cancellation of flights that only bypass a country’s airspace.

This happened with the recent French air traffic control strike.

It said the strikes which started on Thursday and Friday, caused the cancellation of 1,500 flights, upending the travel plans of over 270,000 EU citizens.

Ryanair says 90% of these cancellations would have been avoided if overflights over France were protected during ATC strikes.

It says von der Leyen has failed to take any action and this is ‘indefensible and unacceptable.’

Ryanair’s CEO Michael O’Leary said: “It is unacceptable that Commission President Ursula von der Leyen continues to stand idly by, while the single market for air travel over Europe is repeatedly shut down by French Air Traffic Controllers.”

“She should take immediate action to protect overflights”.
