Australian no frills carrier Jetstar is pulling its Brisbane-Honolulu flights blaming the weak Australian dollar for softening demand.
The airline will end flights in October and add capacity on more cost effective routes to Phuket and Bali.
Jetstar launched the route in December 2014.
Jetstar will continue flying to Honolulu from Sydney and from Melbourne where it has no other competition.
Jetstar parent company, full service carrier Qantas, will also keep flying to Hawaii.
"Despite the lower dollar, the Honolulu routes continue to perform well for both Qantas and Jetstar but it is fair to say we’ve seen a moderate dip in demand out of Brisbane and we believe it is the right time to move this capacity to Asia where more Australians want to travel," Jetstar said.
"Demand for travel to Bali and Phuket is very strong out of Australia right now and we’re responding to this with additional capacity from the eastern seaboard,"
Australian visitor arrivals in Hawaii rose marginally in January but average spending per person on shopping dipped by more than 12%.
"The biggest challenge we have is the exchange rate. The increased price of a holiday to Hawaii is a real concern for people," Hawaii Tourism country manager for Oceania, Kerri Anderson recently said.
