Australians still on the move – overseas
The gap between Australians travelling overseas and international visitors to Australia has broken the one million mark in a 12-month period for the first time.
Peak national tourism body Tourism and Transport Forum (TTF) says the figure underscores fears about the burgeoning tourism balance of trade deficit
Latest figures for June show arrivals for the 2009-10 financial year up 2.7 per cent compared to a 15.9 per cent jump in international travel by Australians.
TTF managing director Chris Brown said, “Until May 2008, we had always had more international visitors to Australia that Australians travelling overseas in a 12 month period, but those days are long gone.
“We’ve gone from about even on an annual basis to 1.08 million more Australians taking international trips than overseas arrivals to Australia.
“On a monthly basis, June was the biggest gap on record – more than 280,000.”
Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson, visiting Australia last week, said he couldn’t understand why Australian tourism was not more successful.
In an interview with Business Spectator he said, “I’m sold on Australia and I think Australia’s a very, very easy sell.
“I’m surprised that the advertising people can’t get the message across.â€
