Although many fliers may find it hard to believe, the average fare for a US flight is at its lowest level since 2010.
Data released by the US Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics said the average 2015 domestic fare fell 3.8% in 2015 to $377, when accounting for inflation.
Much of this can be attributed to the falling cost of jet fuel which has dropped 36% from a year ago, and increased competition from no-frills airlines.
"This confirms what we have been saying: Air travel remains one of the best consumer bargains out there, as evidenced by the record number of people flying — 798.4 million people flew U.S. airlines in 2015," said trade group Airlines for America.
However the statistics do not factor in the ubiquitous add-on charges and fees that most passengers have to pay for nowadays like checked bags, priority boarding and Wi-Fi access.
