Avoid South African townships, warns DFAT
CANBERRA – Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has revised its travel advisory on South Africa following the violence of the past week.
DFAT “strongly advises” against travel to the township areas of Gauteng Province because of the extremely dangerous security situation in these areas.
“Township tourism in Gauteng Province should be avoided. Violent attacks have been directed at foreigners and locals in these townships,” DFAT warned.
The UK Foreign Office has also revised its travel advice for South Africa along similar lines.
Since the end of apartheid, millions of African immigrants have poured into South Africa seeking jobs and sanctuary.
But they have become scapegoats for many of the country’s social problems – its high rate of unemployment, a shortage of housing and one of the worst levels of crime in the world.
