Bali calls for World Silent Day
A group in Bali wants to extend the island’s traditional, Hindu-inspired day of silence – called Nyepi – into World Silent Day (WSD) on March 21.
Bali comes to a standstill on Nyepi Day when Hindu believers refrain from using lights or leaving their homes for 24 hours.
Airports, seaports, shops and restaurants close. Guests staying at the island’s luxury resorts are encouraged to remain within the properties.
Those now backing a World Silent Day believe that if people observe just four hours of silence there would be a dramatic cut in energy use.
Hira Jhamtani, one of WSD’s initiators, said that the campaign would be very effective in making significant emissions cuts.
“During Nyepi, for example, Bali can cut around 20,000 tons of CO2 from the stoppage of transportation operations, including cars, motorcycles and airlines,†she said.
The WSD advocates hope to present 10 million signatures asking the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC to adopt World Silent Day.
Contributions, signatures and public testimonies are available at www.worldsilentday.org.
