Bankrupt Delta should survive domestic crash
P>The worstdomestic aviation crash for nearly five years could hamper the struggling Delta and Comair, according to press reports.
The crash involved a commuter jet crashing just after taking off in the predawn darkness at Lexington, Ky.’s Blue Grass Airport. The plane burst into flames, killing all but one of the 50 passengers and crew.
It could take up to a year to determine the reason for the crash, but officials said Comair Flight 591 apparently tried to take off on the wrong runway, which is not used by commercial airliners. The unlit, 3,500-foot-long runway was too short for the jet to get safely off the ground, officials said.
In the wake of the crash, pilots reported that it is easy to mistake one runway for another, particularly at night or in poor weather conditions.
Despite the crash, the small Comair jet has a good safety record, officials said.
