Barbados tries to calm fears after Briton killed on island
A British man has been murdered in a popular tourist area on the Caribbean island of Barbados.
The Evening Standard newspaper named the deadman as former soldier Brian Mulligan, aged 28, who had worked on Heathrow Terminal 2 after being medically discharged from the army.
He was a father of two who had travelled to Barbados to work.
The incident happened following a dispute with a local man in St Lawrence Gap, Christ Church – a lively tourist strip with restaurants, bars and nightclubs.
The as yet unnamed victim was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in the capital Bridgetown but died of his injuries later.
According to reports by Barbados Today, the British man was in his late twenties and died of fatal chest wounds in the early hours of yesterday morning.
A spokesman for the UK Foreign Office said: "We are aware of the death of a British national in Barbados on June 15.
"We are providing consular assistance to the family at this sad time."
The news report said a local man is suspected of the attack but no arrest has been made.
Adrian Elcock, Chairman for the Barbados Tourism Authority said : "Our absolute priority is the safety of both our community and visitors to our island.
"Barbados is a friendly and welcoming country with more than 250,000 British tourists each year, many of whom are repeat visitors. But, like every country in the world, some crimes will occur.
"Please let me reassure you that we take any incident very seriously indeed and the authorities are investigating this very thoroughly."
