Birmingham airport plans major expansion
Consultation has opened on plans by Birmingham airport to add a second runway and third passenger terminal.
The airport forecasts handling up to 33 million passengers by 2030, against almost 10 million this year.
It claims the proposed expansion would create almost 27,500 jobs and generate income of £957 million in the West Midlands in 25 years times.
The airport’s draft master plan calls for a runway extension, second runway and a third terminal. Consultation on the plan runs until March 31 next year.
Airport managing director Richard Heard described the blueprint as how development could be delivered in a “progressive and sustainable way” up to the year 2030.
He said: “In the West Midlands, Birmingham plays a vital role in supporting the economy with research showing that by the year 2030 the airport could handle 33 million passengers, support over 27,000 jobs and generate around £1 billion of income for the region.
“In the ever changing and increasingly ‘international’ world that we live in today, standing still is not an option.
“We believe that the airport should continue to grow and develop as it has over the last 20 years, to continue to support the growth and development of the region. However, we believe that a coherent, comprehensive and effective policy, which deals with the environmental impact of our operations and future growth and development, is also essential.”
Heard added: “Although some elements of the proposals will not be needed for many years, the draft master plan should remove uncertainty for our nighbours.”
The airport will need planning permission for any development to go ahead.
