Boost for industry as Canary Islands is added to travel corridor
The Canary Islands have been added to the government’s travel corridor in a major boost for the industry.
The Maldives, Denmark and Mykonos have also been added to the list.
It means travellers returning to the UK from 4am on Sunday will no longer have to quarantine.
Liechtenstein has been removed from the list, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said.
The return of the Canary Islands – including Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura – is a major fillip for the industry, and comes just ahead of half term.
While it may have come too late for Jet2 and EasyJet, which will resume flights on 30 October and 2 November respectively, TUI said it will kick start operations tomorrow.
A rush of bookings is now likely.
Travel to Spain and its islands from the UK was brought to a grinding halt at the end of July when the foreign office ruled out all non-essential travel, initially to mainland Spain before extending it to the Canary Islands and Balearics.
Scottish Passenger Agents’ Association President Joanne Dooey described the news as ‘at last, a piece of positive new for the travel industry ‘.
"It remains to be seen if this move today which is very welcome has come in time to save jobs and businesses in travel"
