Boracay closes beach after tourist buries diaper in sand

Saturday, 16 Aug, 2019 0

Authorities closed a stretch of beach on the Philippines island of Boracay after a tourist was filmed burying diapers in the sand.

The footage has gone viral and sparked online outrage.

The female tourist was filmed on the section of beach known as Station 1, prompting the closure of a 100-metre area of the beach.

Tourism secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said it could remain closed for about two days.

"Swimming is restricted temporarily while we do the cleanup and try to trace where the diaper was buried," she told Philippines news outlet ABS CBN.

The woman is being sought and could face charges.

The island was closed for six months last year for comprehensive rehabilitation and reopened with strict new rules to reduce overtourism and waste management issues.

It includes fines for violations by businesses, locals and tourists.
