Business visitor spend exceeds leisure for first time
Business visitors to the UK spent more than leisure visitors for the first time last year, according to British Tourist Authority (BTA) figures.
During 2001 business tourism spend was £3.6billion, compared to £3.1billion for leisure visitors. This was despite the fact that that there were fewer business visitors (6.8million) than leisure visitors (7.6million) during the 12 month period. Never-the-less total spend by visitors to the UK was down some £2 billion (15%) compared to the year before. Total visitor numbers were down 9% to 22.9 million.
BTA business tourism department boss Adam Bates said: “Business tourism is a very lucrative opportunity for many tourism providers in the UK and spending by overseas visitors in this segment has been rising every year since 1993. This trend looks set to continue with investment in UK conference and business tourism facilities and new infrastructure taking place at a record high level.”
