Canaries to host ABTA Travel Convention for second year running
ABTA has opted for the Canary Islands for its annual Travel Convention for the second year in succession.
This year’s event has been confirmed for Gran Canaria on October 7-9. Last year’s convention was in Tenerife.
While China had been mooted as a possible venue for 2008, it is believed a short haul destination with good flight access and a suitable conference venue were the priorities.
Free hotel rooms are to be provided for travel agent delegates by the Gran Canaria Tourist Board.
Flights will operate to the convention between October 4-6 for the mid-week event, with special charters arranged for returns on October 9.
ABTA chief executive Mark Tanzer said: “The Maspalomas Conference Centre provides us with another stunning business setting which is perfect for the UK’s premier travel event of the year.”
Chosen hotels are within walking distance or a five minute coach ride from the convention centre and 20 minutes from the airport.
Roberto Moreno Diaz, president of the Gran Canaria Tourism Board, said: “Gran Canaria is very much looking forward to hosting the Travel Convention in 2008 as we believe it is an excellent opportunity to present our destination to the best of the UK travel industry.
We hope they will be impressed by the improvements we have made and become excellent ambassadors for the island.”
