Cardiff Airport has been offered a £3.5 million government loan to try to attract new long-haul airlines.
The offer was made after Germanwings announced last week that it was ending flights between Cardiff and Dussledorf in 2015. CityJet had already announced it was dropping its service to Glasgow. However, Ryanair has returned to Cardiff to operate a weekly flight to Tenerife.
Wales’ First Minister Carwyn Jones said the Cardiff’s future lies in long-haul services rather than competing with nearby Bristol for short-haul flights.
The airport was bought by the Welsh government 18 months ago for £52 mlllion and has since invested about £10 million in improving its facilities.
