Cellphone fire injures Air Canada passenger

Friday, 2 March 20183 min read

One passenger was injured after a cellphone unexpectedly caught fire aboard an Air Canada jet.

Air Canada Flight 101 was still on the tarmac at Toronto Pearson International Airport as a woman suffered first degree burns and was taken to hospital.

The fire was quickly put out by cabin crew.

"The fire was immediately extinguished by crews and there was no damage to the aircraft, however, the owner of the phone suffered injuries and was treated by emergency services who attended the aircraft," Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick said.

This caused a two-hour delay for the 266 passengers aboard the Dreamliner jet who were headed to Vancouver.

"It was very contained. However customers seated around the incident were invited to deplane so we could clean up the residue from the extinguisher," Fitzpatrick added.

The US Federal Aviation Authority estimates there are more than 30 battery fires on planes each year.
