Sunvil Holidays boss Noel Josephides is to become chairman of sustainable charity The Travel Foundation.
He takes over on January 1 from former BA Holidays managing director Roger Heape, who is retiring as part of a planned rotation of trustees.
Mike Greenacre, managing director of Co-operative Travel Group and a Travel Foundation trustee, will become vice-chairman.
Josephides was instrumental in the creation of the Travel Foundation in 2003 when it was set up to help the travel industry understand, manage and take action on sustainable tourism. He has been a trustee for five years,
Chief executive Sue Hurdle said: “Having two of travel’s best known figures help to lead the charity for the next three years speaks volumes about how far sustainable travel issues have come.
“Noel and Mike work tirelessly to keep sustainable travel issues high on the industry’s agenda and I’m looking forward to working with them to help shape the next phase of our development.”
Josephides said: “The Travel Foundation plays a vital role in educating staff at all levels in our industry about what sustainable travel is about and how they can get involved.
“The funds raised by our partners have helped to get more than 37 projects up and running in 14 destinations around the world as well as to deliver 12 operational tools and 27 communications tools to help companies take action themselves.
“I’m proud that projects such as the Cyprus village routes which take tourists through the mountains to discover the “real” destination, are going from strength to strength.
“But there’s a lot more we can do. Travel is the livelihood of many people around the world. People who, without our help to find new ways of making a living through tourism, would see themselves and their families living in poverty with no hope for the future.
“We will continue to develop our destination based projects which are making a tremendous difference to people and places our customers love to visit.”
Greenacre said: “Tour operators, retailers and hoteliers have made huge strides in implementing sustainable tourism policies and practices over the last few years.
“But sustainable tourism is now more important than ever. We need to keep it on the boardroom, government and media agenda and reach out to a wider cross-section of the industry including transport operators and accommodation providers.”
