Coming home from overseas is less stressful in Chicago, and the peak-hour lines are 16 minutes shorter, thanks to self-service Automated Passport Control kiosks.
The 32 kiosks, which were installed quietly on June 24, have cut average waiting time during peak hours by a third, from 50 minutes to 34, the airport announced.
Chicago in July became the first U.S. airport to get the new technology, which was developed by the Vancouver Airport Authority and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
U.S. passport holders arriving from abroad can scan their passport on the machine, take a photo and complete a customs declaration on a touch screen.
The kiosk issues a receipt, which they take to a customs officer.
