An eight year old child has drowned in a swimming pool on Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas cruise ship.
The boy was pulled out of the water by another passenger but ship medical staff who performed CPR for more than an hour were unable to save him.
A letter dated Monday was issued to fellow passengers informing them of the incident.
"We extend our most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family and friends. I ask that you join us in keeping the child’s family in our thoughts and prayers," the letter read.
The Liberty of the Seas is currently on a seven night sailing out of Galveston, Texas to Roatan, Cozumel and Costa Maya.
There are no lifeguards on any Royal Caribbean ships.
Disney Cruise Line is the only major line which employs lifeguards at sea, a policy it brought in after the near drowning of a four-year old on the Disney fantasy ship in 2013.
