China plans to build the largest and deepest high-speed rail station underneath the busiest section of the Great Wall of China.
The station will be built in Badaling which is about 50 miles from Beijing.
The Badaling section of the Great Wall attracts up to 30,000 visitors in a single day during peak holidays.
"The Badaling station will be located 102m below the surface, with an underground construction area of 36,000sqm, equal to five standard soccer fields, making it the deepest and largest high-speed railway station in the world," Chen Bin, director for China Railway No 5 Engineering told the People’s Daily newspaper.
The station will also link the capital with Zhangjiakou, the host city for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
The site will be excavated using special explosive technologies to ensure the Great Wall is not damaged, Chen said.
