China seeks more protection for tourists in France after robbery
China has called on French authorities to take more action in protecting the well-being and safety of visiting Chinese nationals after another mass robbery in Paris.
In the latest incident a group of 40 Chinese tourists were tear-gassed and robbed in Paris last week.
They were targeted by four suspects in the car park of their hotel located outside the city in what is now a familiar pattern.
It is thought nine bags filled with luxury items were taken.
"We will urge French police to crack this case as soon as they can and bring the criminals to justice, and take even more effective measures to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens in France," said foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying.
Hua said the tour group has since returned to China but investigations in France continue.
A number of similar attacks on Chinese and other Asian tour groups have taken place in recent years by French gangs.
Americans and other tour groups have also been targeted in the past.
They seem to prey on airport and out of town hotels which offer an easy getaway onto the French motorway system.
The latest incident has left some tourists wary.
"We like Paris but we are a bit scared. Chinese tourists are afraid for their safety in Paris," said Chinese tour guide Jenny Xu.
"We tell them again and again to have their bags in front of them. And I tell them not to take so much cash."
