China, Singapore agree mutual visa-free travel
China and Singapore have tentatively agreed a reciprocal visa-free travel arrangement.
As part of a raft of trade agreements, the countries will permit 30 days visa-free stays for both in each direction from next year.
It was agreed at the 19th Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation in Tianjin.
Earlier this summer, China restarted 15-day visa-free travel for Singaporeans to China for business and tourism visits.
It had been suspended since the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, for now Chinese travelers have to apply for visa for Singapore.
This will change in 2024.
Singapore and China want to strengthen cooperation in various sectors, not just tourism, said Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
“Underpinning all of these cooperation projects are the very important people-to-people exchanges,” he said.
Referring to mutual visa-free travel, Wong said full details and expected roll out are still being worked out between the countries.
He expects it to start sometime in early 2024.
