China’s hotels happy to lose their stars
Most hotels would be glad to improve their star ratings but that’s not the case in China, it appears.
Hotels there, in a bid to find a way around a government ban prohibiting officials from staying in luxury hotels, are dropping stars like hot spring rolls.
Several hotel chains have reported a drop in government business following the ban, and have responded by dropping at least one star.
“As the Communist Party led by President Xi Jinping continues a campaign against corruption and government extravagance, some top-of-the-line hotels are feeling the pain,” reports Bloomberg Businessweek, quoting local media sources.
Star reduction attempts have been reported by 56 hotels in China. It has not been confirmed whether or not hotel rates are changing. So far the ban is only aimed at hotel star ratings.
Since Xi Jinping came to office in November 2012, the party has enforced regulations to dismantle extravagant work styles among government workers.
