Chinese find Australia enticing
Wealthy Chinese have discovered Australia as their top holiday destination, according to a new survey.
The Hurun Report, a survey of 600 Chinese millionaires, found Australia was the most desirable destination to visit this year, ahead of France and Hawaii.
Tourism Minister Fran Bailey said China was expected to become one of Australia’s biggest tourism markets, worth about $5.9 billion annually, over the next 10 years.
“This report is great news. Just as Chinese New Year celebrations are kicking on, Australia is being voted as the must-see destination by well-heeled Chinese tourists,” Ms Bailey said.
“The top three leisure activities for China’s elite are travel, golf and swimming – what better place to enjoy all three than Australia?”
Last year, the Federal Government launched the emerging markets strategy and expanded the Approved Destination Status scheme, which allows more Chinese to holiday here.
“The bottom line is with strong interest from Chinese travellers and a well prepared industry with a can-do attitude, we will be able to attract thousands of Chinese tourists, creating more jobs and plenty of opportunities for tourism operators across the country,” Ms Bailey said.
