Cruise lines taking on family face
For the first time, the Disney Wonder will be sailing from Seattle to Alaska. It’s one of Disney’s family friendly fleet of four and it is an example of two recent family vacation trends:
- More cruise ships are catering to multigenerational groups of passengers, according to travel observers.
- Seattle has become the nation’s busiest cruise ship ports, particularly with its easy access to Alaska, according to The Weekly Herald.
Ships are expected to depart Seattle more than 200 times this year, a huge increase from 1999 when there was only a half dozen cruises out of here. More than 800,000 cruisers will be aboard ships leaving from Seattle this year.
One factor prompting the move to Seattle is higher fares to Europe suggested Lanie Morgenstern, a spokeswoman for the cruise industry group CLIA.
"The cruise lines have increasingly become family vacations," said Peter McGraw, a spokesman for the Port of Seattle.
"Enter Disney, one of the leaders in cruise vacations for families. Leveraging the popularity of their theme parks into a floating vacation, the Disney trips enhance the idea of a multi-generational vacation," writes The Weekly Herald.
