Data shows impact of World Cup on travel searches
Travel searches fell 19% on the day England played Croatia in the World Cup semi-final, but jumped 15% after the team’s defeat.
According to data specialists Sojern, the heatwave also impacted bookings on searches from UK consumers.
“The combination of the heatwave in the UK and the distraction of the World Cup no doubt impacted the level of travel searches and we are now seeing a surge in travel intent from UK travellers,” said Matthieu Betton, general manager Europe at Sojern.
“After all major events, including sporting events, we see an immediate impact on travel. This, more often than not, levels out in time.”
Travel searches in general were higher once the England football team was defeated with an increase of 1.6% the day after England were knocked out the World Cup compared to the week before.
TravelSupermarket also reported a 20% uplift in visitors searching for a last minute summer getaway following England’s exit.
The rise also timed with the slightly cooler weather in some regions and the fast approaching school holidays.
