Dixon says Qantas will not leave Australia, but at what price?
Geoff Dixon, Qantas CEO said today while complaining about foreign ownership restrictions on the flying kangaroo, that Qantas would not leave Australia.
Speaking to a transport conference in Canberra Mr Dixon said that despite all the speculation around the company’s plans for the future, there was no intention for Qantas to leave Australia.
He said, “Qantas, and I mean this, has no intention of uprooting from Australia.”
Mr Dixon added though that the foreign ownership restrictions imposed on Australia made it much harder for Qantas, with Qantas facing many airlines which were government-owned and had government support, with restrictions on foreign ownership on Qantas making it extremely hard to raise the necessary funds to expand.
He added, “What these national ownership and control restrictions also do, is limit the access to capital in the world’s most capital-intensive industry”.
Mr Dixon commented that Qantas is undertaking a major savings drive at present and he revealed that the company planned to reduce its management support positions by about 20% within the next six months.
He added, “We’re still going to go ahead very aggressively with our two brand strategy, with Jetstar taking on international operations and we are committed to major ongoing investment in new, more efficient aircraft, while evaluating other opportunities.”
