DOT allows Hawaiian Airlines to seat travelers by weight on American Samoa route

Hawaiian Airlines has won the legal right to continue weighing passengers on its route to American Samoa.
The much derided rule has been described as discriminatory and six complaints were filed with the US Department of Transportation.
However the DOT has upheld Hawaiian’s policy which the airline says is needed to ensure safe distribution of passengers throughout the cabin.
The airline said it found excessive fuel burn on flights to Pago Pago and scrapped pre-selection of seats so that it can distribute weight evenly in the cabin.
After a six-month voluntary passenger survey the route showed an excess weight of 30lb per passenger and baggage compared to the airline’s previous estimate.
The Pago-Pago flight is the only route on Hawaiian where passengers cannot pre-select seats ahead of their flight.
