Dozens of Hyatt hotels hit by malware data breach

Sunday, 13 Oct, 2017 0

Hyatt Hotels Corp has warned customers it suffered a data breach at point of sale (POS) terminals in dozens of hotels earlier this year.

It discovered malware infected POS systems in 41 hotels globally, with a total of seven hotels in US territories Puerto Rico, Guam and in Hawaii impacted.

In a letter to customers, systems were affected between March and July 2017.

"Based on our investigation, we understand that such unauthorized access to card data was caused by an insertion of malicious software code from a third party onto certain hotel IT systems," Hyatt said.

"While we estimate that the incident affected a small percentage of payment cards used by guests who visited the group of affected Hyatt hotels during the at-risk time period, the available information and data does not allow Hyatt to identify each specific payment card that may have been affected," Hyatt said.

The company has urged all guests who may have used a card at the affected hotels during the period to check for any unauthorized payments.

Other locations included Malaysia, China, Brazil, Mexico and Japan.

"Upon discovery, we launched a comprehensive investigation to understand what happened and how this occurred, including engaging leading third-party experts, payment card networks and authorities," the company added.
