Eight-second escape from hotel room costs quarantined guest big fine
A guest under quarantine in Taiwan was hit with a big fine for stepping out of his hotel room – for just eight seconds.
The Filipino migrant worker was fined $3,500 by the Department of Health after he was spotted on CCTV briefly stepping out of his room into the hallway.
He was staying in a hotel in Kaohsiung City.
Authorities told Channel News Asia Taiwan has a strict non-negotiable policy banning any movement outside hotel rooms, no matter for how long.
From the outset Taiwan has imposed strict measures and has been praised for its pandemic response efforts.
It enacted mass testing and rapid contact tracing, and as a result has recorded only seven deaths.
