Eleven air traffic control towers disrupted due to coronavirus infections
The Federal Aviation Administration published a map showing that 11 air traffic control centers have been closed temporarily due to workers testing positive for the covid-19 virus.
This in turn has led to hundreds of flight delays and cancellations while facilities are fumigated.
It has also forced many ATC workers into quarantine as a precaution.
The first ATC facility impacted was Chicago’s Midway International Airport.
Hundreds of flights were later cancelled at Las Vegas McCarran International Airport after a positive test.
Facilities at New York’s LaGuardia and JFK, Indianapolis, Wilmington Airport, Farmingdale Republic Airport, Peoria and Leesburg Executive Airport were all impacted.
It also included off-site Air Route Traffic Control Centres, which are critical operational centers.
When ARTCCs go offline, it usually leads to a ground stop at all nearby airports.
