England restrictions set to ease for US, EU inbound travellers

Sunday, 28 Jul, 2021 0

Senior cabinet ministers are set to discuss a proposal today which could allow all fully vaccinated travellers from the EU and US to avoid quarantine when arriving in England.

It is expected to be discussed at today’s Covid Operations meeting and a change may be formally announced afterwards.

There is speculation it could be implemented by 16 August.

The meeting will also discuss whether it will be formally implemented in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as well.

Current UK nationals can avoid quarantine on their return as most of Europe and the US is on the amber list but this is only currently applicable for those vaccinated in the UK.

Inbound travellers would require either a EU Digital Covid Certificate or a US issued vaccine card for a UK recognised vaccine.

Airlines and travel firms have been calling for an easing of restrictions for inbound travellers for weeks.

It would be a huge boost especially for the inbound sector.

"We want people to be able to come from the US. freely in a way that they normally do. We’re talking to them the whole time," Prime Minister Boris Johnson told LBC.

"At the moment we’re dealing with a Delta wave, the U.S. is dealing with a Delta wave, but be assured that we are on it the whole time. As soon as we have something to say about travel corridors you’ll be hearing from us."

A government source told Reuters the relaxation to allow quarantine-free entry for EU and US travellers is very likely but fully-vaccinated travellers would still have to present a pre-travel Covid-19 test and take another after arrival.
