EU to allow vaccinated Americans in summer

Vaccinated Americans will likely be able to travel to Europe this summer, says European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen.

Speaking to the New York Times, von der Leyen says inoculated US visitors will be admitted but gave no timeline.

"Americans, as far as I see, use European Medicines Agency-approved vaccines. This will enable free movement and travel to the European Union," she said.

"All 27 member states will accept, unconditionally, all those who are vaccinated with vaccines that are approved by EMA," she added.

She noted ‘huge progress’ in vaccination roll out across the US although resuming travel is still dependent on ‘the epidemiological situation.’

Although the bloc will likely recommend easing the year-long ban on non-essential travel from the US, individual member states would have the right to maintain stricter restrictions, which could include quarantines or pre-travel Covid tests.

As of last week at least 42% of Americas have received at least one dose of the Covid vaccination.
