Europcar accused of illegally selling longterm rentals

Europcar is being accused of operating illegally in the UK for two years, according to a report today in the Telegraph.

It is accused of selling rental agreements for terms of longer than 84 days without an agreement with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

According to the report, it did not have the proper agreements in place between July 2015 and June 2017.

It quotes James Daley, director at consumer campaign group Fairer Finance, who said it could mean affected customers could reclaim all or some of their money.

But he said FCA was also partly responsible for not noticing the discrepancy.

A spokesman at broker rentalcars.com told the Telegraph: "Europcar made us aware of this issue on the 5th of July 2017. As a result, we ceased taking any bookings for Europcar over 84 days in length."

A Europcar spokesman told TravelMole: "As part of the normal course of its business, Europcar UK works with all authorities including the FCA in a fully cooperative and transparent manner. The company will not comment on speculation."
