The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a close call near miss of two jets that were taking off on adjacent runways.
A United Airlines and a SkyWest flight were on parallel runways at San Francisco International Airport.
The incident took place earlier in May when the United flight was cleared to make a right turn after taking off.
However, the United plane turned left into the SkyWest flight’s path.
The FAA said it triggered an alert and the SkyWest pilots were forced to take evasive action to avoid a collision.
The jets came within less than 2,000 feet and 275 feet of vertical separation.
Both flights were able to continue to their destinations without any other issues.
The United flight was headed to Dallas, while the SktWest jet later landed safely in Fresno, CA.
It has been reported it was the United first officer’s first ever departure from SFO.
One air traffic controller reportedly said: “This was one of the closest calls we’ve seen at SFO in years.”
United Airlines is reviewing the incident, while the FAA says the United pilot acknowledged the left turn without authorization.
