The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) plans to fine Boeing $3.1 million for safety lapses tied to the Alaska Airlines door plug blowout in early 2024.
A door panel on a Alaska Airlines 737 Max 9 aircraft blew out shortly after the flight took off from Portland, Oregon.
A year-long probe found multiple systemic quality control lapses in the months leading up to the incident.
It relates to hundreds of violations including interfering with the work of safety officials.
These failures were at Boeing’s Renton, Washington factory and contractor Spirit AeroSystems’ facility in Kansas, between September 2023 and February 2024.
Some safety issues continued after the blowout incident.
The FAA said Boeing presented two aircraft for certification which were not airworthy.
The National Transportation Safety Board previously criticized Boeing’s safety culture as a result of the blowout incident.
